The Board

  • John Cook

    John Cook is a Director Emeritus of McKinsey & Company. Mr. Cook has spent 39 years in the consumer products industry. With McKinsey he completed consulting assignments across five continents. He led McKinsey’s Packaged Goods Practice, Food Retailing Practice, and the Firm’s Global Corporate Strategy Practice. He has led impact across a wide range of clients in industries such as consumer packaged goods, retailing, media, and agricultural cooperatives.

    Mr. Cook also has held several line management positions. Early in his career he was in line marketing with Gillette and Procter & Gamble. More recently, he assumed the No. 2 position at The Kellogg Company for several years. While there, Mr. Cook played an instrumental role in turning around the company’s core business; acquired and integrated four high-growth strategic acquisitions, including Kashi; strengthened the company’s relationship with its major customers; and created a new innovation pipeline for the company’s R&D efforts.

    Mr. Cook was a Baker Scholar at the Harvard Business School, where he was given the Brown Award as the top marketing graduate. Prior to Harvard, he received dual degrees – with high distinction in business administration and with honors in economics – from the University of Michigan.

  • Gary Hirshberg

    Gary Hirshberg is Chairman of Stonyfield Farm, the world’s leading organic yogurt producer, and Managing Director of Stonyfield Europe, with organic brands in Ireland and France. Gary serves on several corporate and nonprofit boards including Sweet Earth. In 2011, President Obama appointed Gary to serve on the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. He is Chairman and a founding Partner of “Just Label It!,” the national campaign to label genetically engineered foods, and is co-author of Label It Now – What You Need to Know About Genetically Engineered Foods. He is the author of Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World. Gary has received twelve honorary doctorates and numerous awards for corporate and environmental leadership including a 2015 Champion for Children Award from Mount Sinai Hospital’s Children’s Environmental Health Center and a 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award by the US EPA.

  • Bob Kavner

    Robert Kavner is currently serving as Chairman of Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula and more recently been on the board of First Tee of America, The Naval Postgraduate School and the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey. After graduating from Adelphi University in 1965, Bob joined Price Waterhouse & Coopers and was admitted partnership of the firm after ten years. In 1984, Bob was recruited to be CFO of AT&T and four years later was made President of AT&Ts computer business and then promoted to be CEO of the Multimedia Products and Services Group and as a member of the Executive Committee. During this time he served on the board of Sun Microsystems, Philips Telecommunications, Fleet Bank of Boston, and Duracell International. In 1994, Bob left the corporate world and moved to California so he could pursue a career as an entrepreneur in technology start-ups. He was part of the creation of Idealab, a leading technology incubator and was Chairman of a number of start-ups that grew to become public companies. They include Citysearch, Overture (now a major component of Yahoo), Earthlink Networks and Pandora Media.

  • Paul Richardson

    Paul is CEO of Renewal Funds, a Vancouver based investment company focused on organic food and environmental innovation. Paul is a graduate of Queen’s University (Biology) and the University of Toronto (Law). Paul is also a Board Director for Renewal Funds on the Alter Eco, Opti, and Sensible Organics. Paul has considerable not-for-profit experience, having served as Vice Chair of the Coast Opportunities Funds, President of Ecojustice Canada, as well as having negotiated on behalf of an international consortium of philanthropic foundations to structure a financing deal that supported the conservation of the Great Bear Rainforest, the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest left in the world. In 2013, Paul was named as one of Canada’s Clean50.
